Explore the world of hill and mountain skills with our comprehensive course, designed as the ideal introduction to mountain walking in the UK. Whether your aspirations involve future mountaineering endeavours, pursuing a Mountain Leader certification, or simply boosting your confidence with map and compass use, our 2-day Hill and Mountain Skills Course serves as the perfect inaugural step.

This program imparts crucial skills, ensuring a safe and enjoyable exploration of the mountains, and showcasing the stunning scenery the UK has to offer. Beyond the scope of a typical one-day course, our 2-day offering provides an in-depth education, establishing a robust foundation and instilling the confidence needed to navigate the mountains independently.

Emphasizing safety in mountain walking, the Hill and Mountain Skills Course covers an extensive range of topics, including weather awareness, emergency procedures, and mountain navigation. By course completion, you’ll be well-prepared and confident to tackle mountain terrain.

For those aspiring to master navigation in adverse conditions or during nighttime excursions, we highly recommend supplementing your skills with our Night Navigation Course for an additional £60. This supplementary course ensures a well-rounded education in mountain walking, equipping you to face any adventure the mountains may present.

A Mountain Skills course is a great way to learn the essential skills you will need to enjoy the mountains in the UK safely. Whether you have ambitions to climb Everest, become a Mountain Leader or you’d like to feel more confident using a map, a Mountain Skills course is a great first step.

Before you can attend a Mountain Skills course you need to register on the Hill & Mountain Skills scheme. Registration is FREE for 12-17 year olds and £20 for adults and it gives you access to both courses. To register, create an account on our candidate management system or log in if you already have one.

A Mountain Skills course will start with an opportunity to meet the other people on the course and take part in a short planning session with the course tutor. After that you will be out in the mountains, moving away from marked paths and into steeper, rockier terrain in order to learn about the differences in weather, navigation and managing risk in the mountain environment.

The physical effort required on these days will be more demanding than the Hill Skills course and you can expect to be out in the mountains for between 5-6 hours. In addition, many of our providers will run an evening session that can either be a walk into darkness or an additional teaching session on other elements of the course syllabus.

Planning – how to successfully plan a walk in the mountains in the UK or Ireland.

Walking skills – what things should you consider while out walking and what can make life easier (pace, nutrition, movement skills, steep ground etc).

Clothing and equipment – being suitably dressed and equipped can make the difference between a great day out and a complete disaster.

Weather – how it affects the mountains and your day out.

Navigation in the mountains – everything from selecting a compass and using a map to navigation in poor visibility and an intro to GPS.

Environmental knowledge – how to minimise your impact on the hill, information on good practice and useful organisations.

Hazards and emergency procedures in the mountains – how to respond to any hazards you encounter and what to do in an emergency.

The course cost is £135 for both days but does not include your registration fee.
