If you have spend some time in the uk mountain over the summer months or you might have even done a mountaineering course or summer navigation course with us in the past. Then a winter skills course in the Lake District is the next logical step up and opens up a whole new world for you. Winter mountain walking is an exciting and amazing way to spend the day however it comes with its dangers and if your not safe, know what your doing or have the right experience you get yourself into trouble quick!

The one-day winter skills course in the Lake District offers a unique opportunity to experience UK mountain winter conditions and learn how to stay safe. The one day winter skills course is perfect for those seeking a refresher or starting the winter season. The course is designed for participants with prior mountain walking experience. However, if you are new to mountain walking, it is advisable to take a Hill and Mountain skills course before joining the one-day winter skills course.

The course is structured to provide a basic understanding of winter mountain safety the day will be spent on high fells, with an altitude ranging from 650 to 900 meters, around areas such as Helvellyn. The hands-on approach allows you to practice the skills in real-life situations, providing a realistic learning environment that maximizes the benefits of the day.

All about the Winter skills course Lake District.

Ever wanted to venture on to the fells when the white stuff is on the ground ? Ever wanted to see if you can make it to the top when the nights are longer than the days? Our 1 day winter skills course is the perfect way to get an idea of what it takes.

The course is put together to allow you to be able to head into the mountains with a basic knowledge and skill of being in the mountains in the winter. We spend the day in the on the high fells normally at a high of 650 – 900 meters where your be able to practise the skills in a real situations

Over the day you will look at covering basic

  • Navigation – how to use a map and compass in the winter
  • Winterising your kit – Keeping things dry, the biggest difference between summer and winter clothing
  • Avalanche awareness – How to understand, interpreted and use
  • How to move on steep ground wearing crampons – Walking in crampons is not as easy as you would think !
  • Using the ice axe correctly – Understanding the use of an axe and how best to maximise its use.

The course cost covers :

  • A Winter Mountain Leader for the duration of the course
  • Any maps you may need for the day
  • The course content
  • Any learning aids such as timing cards, hand outs etc

The course cost does not cover

  • Travel to and from the venue
  • Accommodation
  • Kit hire – please contact us if you do need to hire crampons or mountaineering axe
  • Food and drink for the day.

You don’t need to be superman for this course but we are heading into the mountains for around 9 hours so we do ask that a reasonable level of fitness is required.

We can help you with by hiring them out just let use know in advance.

  • Crampons – £50 per day
  • Ice axe – £40 per day

If you have had some summer mountain walking experience before then this course is going perfect for you.

Or if you have done a course before and looking for a top up before the winter season starts again this is ideal for you.

Great 1 day course with Sam and Jack this weekend - not ideal conditions but they made it work and we loved it so much. We now feel really ready to explore the lake district in the winter.
