Our Scottish Winter Skills Course is designed to give you the knowledge, confidence, and practical experience needed to enjoy the mountains safely during winter. Whether you're preparing for your first snowy hillwalk or looking to refresh essential skills before heading into more challenging terrain, this course provides expert instruction in a real mountain environment.
Held in the Cairngorms National Park, you'll spend the day learning practical techniques on snow and ice rather than in a classroom. Every skill is taught in the conditions where you'll actually use it, helping you build confidence through hands-on experience.
Throughout the day you'll learn how to move efficiently across winter terrain, use an ice axe correctly, walk safely in crampons, navigate in poor visibility, and understand the factors that influence safe decision-making in winter. Small group sizes ensure plenty of individual coaching and opportunities to ask questions throughout the course.
Our experienced instructors tailor each day to the weather, snow conditions, and the experience of the group, ensuring every course delivers the best possible learning experience.
Travelling in the mountains during winter requires a completely different set of skills than summer hillwalking. Snow, ice, shorter daylight hours and rapidly changing weather all present unique challenges. Our Scottish Winter Skills Course teaches you the fundamental techniques needed to travel safely and confidently, helping you develop the knowledge to make informed decisions in a winter environment.
