The Esk Ghyll Scramble with Adventuring is one of the most exciting and adventurous days out in the Lake District. Set deep within the remote Eskdale valley, this full-day guided experience combines hiking, scrambling, swimming, waterfall climbing and optional cliff jumps in a wild mountain gorge.
This is not a gentle walk in the hills — Esk Ghyll is a serious adventure for those looking to push their comfort zone and experience the Lake District in a completely different way. Water, steep ground, exposed scrambling and an unforgettable sense of journey through one of the area’s most dramatic hidden landscapes.
Esk Ghyll is a narrow mountain stream that cuts down from the high fells above Eskdale. Instead of following a path, you travel directly through the ghyll, scrambling upstream past waterfalls, climbing rock steps, swimming through deep pools and navigating natural obstacles carved into the rock.
The route involves:
Scrambling beside and through waterfalls
Swimming through deep plunge pools
8 meters jumps into clear mountain water
Steep, rocky terrain in a remote environment
Every challenge is optional, and your guide will always offer alternative ways around obstacles where possible
This is a full-day experience and should be approached as a proper mountain day.
The day begins with a long approach walk (around 1.5 hours) to reach the start of the ghyll. You’ll carry all your equipment with you, including food, water and spare clothes. Once in the gorge, you’ll change into wetsuits before beginning the scramble.
At the end of the route, there is a walk out back to the vehicles, making this a long, rewarding and physically demanding day
