Lake District Ghyll Scrambling with Adventuring
Why Choose Ghyll Scrambling in the Lake District?
Ghyll scrambling is one of the most unique and exhilarating outdoor experiences the Lake District has to offer. Follow the course of a mountain stream hands-and-feet — scrambling over waterfalls, traversing rocky ledges, wading through pools and climbing through gorges that few walkers ever see. It is part adventure, part exploration and completely unforgettable.
Also known as gorge walking, ghyll scrambling takes you into the hidden heart of the Lake District fells — away from the crowds and into landscapes that only exist when you follow the water upstream. Our qualified instructors run sessions on some of the finest ghylls in the region, from the classic Stickle Ghyll above Langdale to the spectacular Esk Ghyll deep in the remote Eskdale valley.
Suitable for ages 8 and up. No experience needed. All equipment provided.

Why Our Sticklebarn Ghyll Is Perfect for Beginners
Our Sticklebarn ghyll scrambling venue in Great Langdale is one of the best beginner-friendly locations in the Lake District. It offers natural waterfalls, pools and rock features without the intensity of more advanced canyoning routes.
This makes it ideal for families, younger children and first-time adventurers who want a real outdoor experience without needing previous experience.
Ghyll Scrambling vs Canyoning – What’s the Difference?
Ghyll scrambling and canyoning are often confused, but they offer different experiences.
Ghyll scrambling focuses on climbing, scrambling, swimming and exploring natural mountain streams and waterfalls. It is ideal for beginners and families.
Canyoning is usually more intense, with bigger jumps, deeper water and more technical descents — for canyoning you need to be aged 12 and above.
If you are looking for a fun first adventure in the Lake District, ghyll scrambling is often the best place to start and is ideal for families with small children.
What Happens During Your Ghyll Scrambling Session
Your session starts with a safety briefing and equipment fitting — helmet, wetsuit and harness. Your instructor will then lead you into the ghyll, coaching you through each section and making sure everyone feels safe and confident before moving on.
A typical ghyll scrambling session includes:
- Scrambling up rocky sections beside and through the stream
- Wading through pools and shallow water
- Climbing natural waterfalls using handholds and footholds in the rock
- Traversing ledges above the water
- Optional jumping into pools (nothing is compulsory)
- Exploring hidden gorge sections that feel completely wild and remote
Sessions last approximately 2.5 hours. The experience is completely different to walking — it is immersive, physical and demands full attention. By the end you will be wet, tired and grinning.
