Check August Availability →Summer in the Lake District is something special. Long days, (mostly!) warm weather, and some of the most dramatic scenery in England right on your doorstep. Whether you’re planning your first outdoor adventure or you’re a seasoned explorer looking to take things up a notch, summer is the perfect time to get out there and experience everything this incredible part of the world has to offer.
Here are our top tips to make the most of your Lake District adventure this summer.
1. Get Out Early — The Lakes Reward Early Risers
Summer weekends in the Lake District get busy, and for good reason. Our biggest tip? Start early. Whether you’re heading up Scafell Pike, into a gorge for a morning of ghyll scrambling, or out on the crags for a rock climbing session, the early hours offer quieter trails, cooler temperatures, and that magical morning light you simply can’t get at midday.
We typically run sessions from 10am, which gives you plenty of time to grab breakfast, travel to the meeting point, and arrive fresh and ready to go.
2. Dress for the Lake District, Not the Weather App
This is one of the most important lessons any visitor to Cumbria learns quickly: the weather can change fast. You might start the day in sunshine and find yourself in low cloud and drizzle within an hour — and then back to glorious sunshine again by lunchtime.
Our golden rules for summer dressing:
- Wear a base layer — moisture-wicking, not cotton. Cotton stays wet and gets cold fast.
- Bring a waterproof jacket — even in July and August. A lightweight packable one takes up almost no space.
- Wear sturdy footwear — walking boots or trainers with grip. Flip flops are a firm no.
- Pack a warm layer — a fleece or mid-layer is a lifesaver if the temperature drops.
For activities like ghyll scrambling and canyoning, we provide wetsuits, helmets and buoyancy aids — so you don’t need to worry about getting wet. Just bring a change of dry clothes for afterwards.
3. Choose the Right Adventure for Your Group
The Lake District offers something for everyone, but it’s worth thinking about who’s coming before you book. Here’s a quick guide:
Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning — Perfect for families, groups of friends, stag and hen parties, and anyone who loves getting stuck in. Minimum age is 10 years. Expect waterfalls, gorges, natural slides and pools. Pure fun.
Rock Climbing — Great for individuals, couples and small groups who want to learn real skills. Our qualified instructors teach you the basics from the ground up in a stunning natural setting. No experience needed.
Multi-Pitch Climbing — For those ready to take their climbing to the next level. You’ll cover multiple rope lengths on bigger routes, building confidence and technique throughout the day.
Guided Walks & Hill Skills — If you want to explore the fells properly — learning navigation, reading terrain, and understanding mountain safety — our guided walks are the ideal way to do it. Stunning views guaranteed.
4. Hydration and Snacks — Don’t Underestimate Them
A full day outdoors burns a lot of energy. Bring at least 2 litres of water and pack plenty of snacks — think energy bars, fruit, sandwiches. Even for a half-day session, hunger and dehydration can take the edge off what should be a brilliant experience.
We’d also recommend applying suncream before you set off, especially on the fells where there’s less shade and the UV can be surprisingly strong.
5. Book in Advance — Summer Fills Up Fast
We’re not saying this just to nudge you towards the booking button (though it helps!) — summer genuinely is our busiest season. Weekends in July and August book up weeks in advance, and even midweek slots go quickly for popular activities like Church Beck canyoning and Langdale rock climbing.
If you have a specific date in mind, the best advice is to secure it as soon as possible. And if you’re flexible on dates, midweek sessions often offer a quieter, more personal experience.
