Rock Climbing, Langdale

Everything you need to know before your session

This page has everything for a rock climbing session in Langdale — where to meet, what time, what to bring and what I provide. If you're already booked, have a read before you set off and there'll be no surprises on the day.

Booked on something else? All the other information pages are here.

What to expect

The Lake District has some of the best crags in the country, and Langdale puts them a stone's throw away.

This session is about getting as much climbing in as possible. You'll do several different climbs at a range of grades, and I'll pitch them to whoever turns up — there's something here whether you've never touched rock before or you climb regularly.

You don't need any experience. I'll talk you through everything on the day, from putting a harness on to how to move on the rock and where to put your feet.

You'll be roped and belayed on every climb, and how far you go up is entirely your call. Plenty of people get halfway, come down, and go back up higher on the next one.

Where to meet me

The National Trust car park, Great Langdale, LA22 9JU — the one at Sticklebarn. I'll be waiting at the top of the car park, look out for the Lake District Adventuring van.

If you've driven past a camp site on your left, you've gone too far.

It's a National Trust pay and display car park, so bring some change or a card. National Trust members park free — just display your card. It fills up quickly in summer and over bank holidays, so give yourself a few extra minutes.

Please arrive 10 minutes before your start time so I can get you kitted out and briefed without eating into your session. Running late? Call or WhatsApp me on 07502 604166 — I'd much rather know.

What to bring

  • Walking boots or trainers — something with a bit of grip that you can stand around in
  • Comfortable clothes you can move in — long trousers are best, they save your knees and shins
  • Warm layers. You'll be standing still between climbs and crags are colder than they look
  • A waterproof jacket
  • A drink and a snack
  • Change or a card for the car park, unless you're a National Trust member

I don't provide footwear, so that one really does need to come with you.

What I provide

  • A fitted harness and helmet
  • Ropes and all the technical climbing equipment
  • A fully qualified, experienced instructor — that's me
  • Photos throughout the session, sent to you afterwards

Before you come

Everyone taking part needs to complete the medical and disclaimer form. It's online — no printing, no paperwork on the day. You'll find it under “View Required Documents” on your booking receipt email. If you're booking for a group, every person needs to complete their own.

If anyone in your group has a medical condition, an injury, or is taking medication, tell me before the day rather than on the morning. It almost never stops anyone taking part — it just means I can plan properly.

Still got a question?

Call or WhatsApp me on 07502 604166, or email info@lakedistrictadventuring.co.uk.

It's me that answers, not a call centre.

Your rock climbing questions answered

The things people ask me most before a climbing session. If yours isn't here, just give me a ring.

None at all. Most people who come climbing with me have never done it outdoors before. I'll show you everything on the day — how the harness goes on, how the rope works, and how to move on the rock.
You'd be surprised how many people say that, and how many end up higher than they expected. You're roped and belayed the whole time, and you decide how far you go. Getting a few metres off the ground and coming back down is a perfectly good session.
